Altea Events Calendar 2019 - Things to see and do in Altea

A little information about what is happening in Altea Summer  and Fall 2019.  This Altea events calendar includes Altea Festivals, cultural events such as concerts, plays, and dance as well as Altea markets. Fun Fact:  Altea will be Valencian cultural capital from April 25, 2019 to April 25, 2020!!

Altea Tuesday Market: Near the sports centre on the outside of Altea under the railway bridge located on the old car park is quite an extensive market which is popular with the tourists. Here typical stalls sell scarves, clothing of various types including Spanish dresses for children, leather goods, pots and pans. There is also a cafe and music stalls where Spanish music plays during the morning. There are two markets in Altea. In the centre near the old town, on a side street is an open air fruit and vegetable market that also sells flowers, herbs, nuts and sweets. Very popular with the locals. Both markets start at 8 am and last until around 1 or 2 p.m.

Friday 20th September 2019

13:00 Official announcement of the fiesta with ringing of the church bells and the firing of rockets.

18:00 Spectacular Entra de la Murta Parade Route: Aparcamiento Facultad, C/ Benidorm, Avda. de la Nucía, Pl. La Creu, Pont de Moncau, Avda. Jaume I, and Pl. dels Sports.

20:00 Parade of the Music Bands from the Plaça de la Creu to the Pont de Moncau then onto the Plaça Jose Mª Planelles.

21:00 Presentation of the flags, followed by the pasodoble Ida y Vuelta.

22:00 Inauguration of the barracas for partying in the Cami de l'Algar car park.

24:00 Entrance Parade of the Moors and Christians starting from the Avenida La Nucía along Plaça de La Creu, Pont de Moncau, Avda. Jaume I, finishing at C/ Garganes.

Free guided tour CAP BLANC - discover the History and Archeology in Cap Blanc.  Starting from the promenade, this route takes us through Cap Blanch, El Planet and Els Arcs. In them we can visit the ruins of an ancient cenia, the hermitage of Sant Antoni and Sant Jaume and the new one of Sant Isidre, as well as the remains of a Roman aqueduct, the first great hydraulic work of Altea. Sunday December 8 2019 at 10:00h Free guided tour Altea La Vella - A 3 hour tour in Altea la Vella, located inside the municipality of Altea, had its own entity from the Middle Ages to the sixteenth century. This territory, between the Algar River and the Sierra de Bernia, suffered population displacements and even demographic vacuums. The first evidence of occupation of the lands of Altea la Vella, although they are scarce, place us in the Neolithic. From s. V d.C. there was a demographic contraction but everything was revitalized in the Andalusian period, when the Altāya farmhouse became the organizing nucle of the territory. The Christians changed the name to “Altea”, a town which the feudal economic exploitation of the north of the Algar River was organized until the 16th century. In this period the houses of Altea were uninhabited until in the 18th century other people came back to live there, whose village they called “Altea la Vella”. Language English/Castellano. Previous events

 

June 21 to June 24 2019 The SAN JUAN -  l’Arbret Altea Festival. In Altea they have a very unique way of celebrating the Festival of San Juan. They still have a pagan ritual of the Solstice of summer and the fertility of land dating probably back to 1617: l'Arbret plant.  On Sunday morning of June 23rd, fifty young people will cut a large poplar tree on the banks of the Algar river. It will be moved to the parking lot of the Faculty of fine arts and at 18:30h about 100 young men start carrying it on their shoulders to transfer it to the square of the Church, at the top of Altea. They will be accompanied by music while walking several streets. Read more about the Festival of San Juan Altea.

In addition to the nature and the delights of the earth, this tour highlights the hermitage of Sant Roc and Pi del Senyoret. For Altea, the hermitages represent a heritage of incalculable value, surrounded by the oldest traditions, preserved to this day. From the refoundation of the town, the population was colonizing all corners of the term, creating over time cores of houses surrounded by orchards and terraces popularly called ‘’partidas’’. These inhabited enclaves transformed the landscape and with the effort of the neighbors were born roads, ditches, … and of course, the hermitages. Saturday February 23 at 12:00h: Festa del Porquet  2019 (Annual festival of the pig). Pork is a staple food in Spanish cuisine. You will find the traditional hams hanging on hooks from bar-room ceilings, suckling pigs being the main course for celebratory meals and pigs’ tails or trotters being used to make hearty stew. None of the animal goes to waste. It starts at 12:00h in the old town with music and parade, followed by a hearty rice dish to share at about 2pm in the old town at Plaza de la Iglesias, 03590 Altea. The singing gets under way after the meal followed by dancing in the old town at 6 pm. and then hot chocolate at about 6:30 pm to round off the celebrations.

Saturday 2nd December 2017 at 18:30h at Palau Altea: The Philharmonic Society Alteanense (SFA) presents the 44th edition of the prestigious International Music Competition Vila de Altea. The theme of this edition will be 'ALTEA 1617', since this year the SFA is added to the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the signing of the Pobla Charter of the Villa de Altea and devotes Vila SUMMIT Altea to this historic event that being held along the entire 2017. The test piece is '400', Andrés Valero Castells.
